Title: The Perfect Picnic Author: Ciara Flood
Squirrel and Mole, the best of friends, decide to go on a picnic. Squirrel is determined to make this the "Most Perfect Picnic Ever," which means finding the perfect spot and ensuring every detail is just so. However, her perfectionism leads to a series of failed attempts at finding the ideal location, from the meadow to the corn field, each one not meeting her standards.
Despite Mole's easygoing nature and willingness to accommodate Squirrel's demands, their picnic plans are constantly thwarted. Eventually, they discover that the food is missing, adding to their disappointment.
Through their experiences, both characters learn valuable lessons. Squirrel realizes that not everything has to be perfect to be fun, while Mole becomes more outspoken about his preferences for future picnics.
The book has received positive reviews for its charming storyline and engaging illustrations. Here are some excerpts from reviews:
Story Snug: "Squirrel and Mole have very different personalities and their differences are brilliantly portrayed in the first two double spreads of the story. Squirrel is a perfectionist, her house is immaculately tidy, her cake is a work of art and her painting is ‘a masterpiece’ (my daughter’s word!) in comparison to Mole’s more messy look. It is Squirrel’s need for perfectionism that leads to her rejecting Mole’s picnic spot suggestions but Mole is so easygoing that he agrees with all her excuses then comforts her when they discover that the food is missing. By the end of the story both characters have learnt something from their experience – Squirrel realises that not everything has to be perfect to be fun and Mole has become more outspoken about the way that he wants to do things next time."
Library Girl and Book Boy: "A charming tale about the importance of compromise and considering the feelings of your friends. The luminous illustrations ooze warmth and perfectly capture the dreamy feeling of a balmy Summer’s day. I also love the hints of humour woven into them and the subtle nod to Edvard Munch’s ‘The Scream.’ A perfect read as we (hopefully) enter picnic season."
Bookroo: "A hilarious story from the author of Those Pesky Rabbits about friendship, perfectionists, and losing your sandwiches. Squirrel and Mole are the best of friends, and they do everything together, including going on picnics. But while Mole doesn’t really mind where they have a picnic, Squirrel is very determined that this picnic will be PERFECT, and that means finding the perfect place. But does such a thing exist? Sometimes even the best laid plans go awry . . . including Mole and Squirrel’s plans for the perfect picnic. This story of friendship, problem solving and teamwork has a great message—it doesn’t have to go perfectly to be fun The illustrations add a new layer of depth to the story and provide lots of opportunities for digging a little deeper."
Overall, "The Perfect Picnic" by Ciara Flood is a heartwarming tale that teaches young readers valuable lessons about friendship, compromise, and the importance of enjoying the moment rather than striving for perfection. The book's engaging storyline and delightful illustrations have made it a popular choice for children's literature.
