Oggi bracco la vita con un linguaggio di cui mi auguro che il lettore eventuale si sforzi di penetrare l'ambiguità apparente. Io cerco di avvolgere le impressioni indicibili in una bruma poetica perché vengano più intuite che comprese, e cerco di lasciare un vuoto intorno alle parole perché nell'alone che si viene a creare trovi spazio il fremito dei livelli interiori. Raccontare i momenti più significativi della mia esperienza non avrebbe alcun interesse se mirasse soltanto a soddisfare in chi legge il desiderio di capire. Io mi auguro che questo linguaggio produca nel lettore un fermento da cui, nel migliore dei casi, emerga una sensazione analoga alla mia. E' inopportuno esprimere nel linguaggio abituale quanto di prezioso anima i momenti in cui le impressioni banali dell'esistenza si fanno da parte. E sarei molto contento se queste note scritte sul filo del rasoio fossero, come dice Littré della vecchia lingua francese, una lingua straniera che il cercatore incamminato sulla nostra via capisca immediatamente. Perciò tengo a sottolineare che, nella lingua utilizzata in questi miei scritti, esistono quelle che chiamerei - come altri hanno fatto - equivalenze, vale a dire immagini che s'incarnano nel discorso senza esserne la «decorazione» e che, invece di limitarsi a sviluppare il tema scelto, hanno la funzione di essere la cosa stessa.
